Retrieving browser Internet histories has become a staple
of both "high-tech" and non-computer related investigations.
Most
Internet browsers, including Microsoft’s Internet
Explorer and Netscape, keep track of the user’s Internet
browsing history. This history shows what sites the user visited
and what pages they viewed.
Even when the user attempts to
delete this information, his or her browsing activity can
often be recovered through a computer forensic search.
Computer
forensic
technicians may be able to retrieve the exact time, location
and content of web pages and Internet sites viewed. The
information retrieved may include web browsing history, e-mail,
chat
room logs or instant messaging conversations.
